I've had success with the Netgear WNR3500L running DD-WRT. It doesn't have 5GHz but it does 2.4GHz great and on the cheap. The one I'm running now I bought refurbished for $35 and its rock solid stable and performs well. Of course, its WiFi, so I'm already wishing I had AC so my portable devices were as fast as my wired desktop. But I don't think that will ever change. WiFi will probably never catch up to our ever increasing internet download speeds.
