From my experience, clients generally prefer native, as the quality is so much better. Looking more closely, however, agencies / freelancers pitch HTML5 apps at a considerably lower cost than native. I've seen them come in at half the cost. What would the result be if you got 2 developers, 1 with 5 years experience building HTML5 apps and 1 with 5 years building native apps, and gave them 3 months to create an apps for Android and iOS?
