Interesting points... I think there may be many differences here based on things like gender, age, and subculture. I think it's highly context-dependent. The advice she gave was actually pretty spot-on for a young woman networking in a social, informal party situation. Not so much for older people, more formal business contexts, or perhaps for men. But at the same time, much of the networking advice out there is biased toward the stereotypical middle aged man in a suit at a business function, so I found it refreshing to see a context I find myself in a lot more often discussed in this article. I guess the real trick to good networking is being able to correctly read the subtleties of social contexts and adjust accordingly - harder to encapsulate in a blog post unfortunately!
