I share you skepticism about involving the authorities. Once, when I had started up a new online business that accepts credit card payments, I detected fraudulent activity. I did some investigating and was able to pinpoint a lot of details about the fraudster. I proudly reported all of this to my merchant bank and they rewarded me by locking down my accounts. I had to get a lawyer involved to explain that when I reported fraud, I wasn't reporting MYSELF as the perp! My lawyer's advice? Next time, cancel the fraudster's access to your service but keep your mouth shut!
