This is very much an annoying off topic observation, but seeing this title makes me think:
'Algorave' Is the Future of Dance Music (if You're a True Scotsman)
Why can't we just have it be the future of Dance music, why does it have to be "if you're a Nerd".
- dragonwriter 13y ago> Why can't we just have it be the future of Dance music Because that's a stronger claim -- that it is the future of Dance music for everyone. > why does it have to be "if you're a Nerd". Because with that qualification, its a weaker claim -- for the rest of the universe, it may not be the future of dance music.
- yodsanklai 13y agoJust nitpicking here, but it's not really a weaker claim. Either it's the future of dance music, or it's not. The future of dance music is the same for everyone. Or maybe they mean, what nerds think the future of dance music is.
- tokenizer 13y agoI'd go even farther than you are. By claiming "if you're a nerd", they're creating a class distinction where one group can and does ascertain truth, while the "others" cannot and will not. So not only is it the future of dance music, but you'll only know if your privilege and knowledge can allow you to. A modern day hermetics of sorts. But you know, thats just, my opinion man...
- tesseractive 13y agoOne possible interpretation is that the scene is completely awesome as long as you're capable of coding and thus being one of the real participants, but that it's less interesting for pure spectators. Thus, for music coders -- "nerds" -- it is the future, but for non-nerds, there are more appealing alternatives.
- dragonwriter 13y ago> Just nitpicking here, but it's not really a weaker claim. Yes, it is. > Either it's the future of dance music, or it's not. This statement excludes many possibilities. > The future of dance music is the same for everyone. This is not necessarily true. Different subcultures can, and often do, have different dance music. Its quite possible for the "future of dance music" to be different for different subcultures. EDIT: Though, there are multiple different plausible interpretations of "This is the future of dance music (if you're a nerd)", and I've been focussing on the interpretation that could be rephrased as "This is the future of dance music for nerds". Other possibilities include "This is what nerds see as the future of dance music" and the distinct-but-closely-related "If you believe that this is the future of dance music, you must be a nerd". In those other cases, its not a weaker claim but a completely different claim than the plan "This is the future of dance music" claim.
- coldtea 13y ago>Just nitpicking here, but it's not really a weaker claim. Either it's the future of dance music, or it's not. The future of dance music is the same for everyone. Nope. Dance music has what we call "genres" (and target groups). Nothing will be the future of ALL dance music, except if all people decide to adopt one dance genre.
- anigbrowl 13y agoThe future of dance music is to get even more fragmented. There have been many scenes in the past and there will be more in future that never get near radio or festival stages.
- yaxu 13y agoBecause titles aren't written by journalists, they're written by sub editors, and so tend to be totally out of step with the rest of the article.
- kazagistar 13y agoBecause the music does not sound as good as most music to most people... unless you find the tech interesting, you are likely to not enjoy it that much.
- JanezStupar 13y agoBecause it sucks. Its sucks even more than IDM. It sucks so hard that no sane person would listen to it. To listen to and to create algorave you need to be an absolute hopeless nerd. That much is implied by the title and it is true. They are just creating electronic music using a horrible user interface. And its not cool.
- yid 13y agoI agree, but it's early days yet for the genre. You're looking at the Netscape of algorithmic music. Most people qualified to innovate in that algorithms space are busy writing programs to improvise jazz solos (i.e., they're generally a bit on the...older...side of electronic music).
- JanezStupar 13y agoAnd do these algorithmically improvised jazz solos sound better than what humans can do? Is it more fun to listen to than listening to a group of solid amateur performers? Moreover are amateur performers converting to the algo scene in droves? If one of the above answers is no, then my point stands and will keep standing indefinetly. As it stands I would, hands down, prefer listening to Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber over algorave.
- JonnieCache 13y ago>why does it have to be "if you're a Nerd" Because, as mentioned upthread, it's not really good enough to stand alone as dance music. It's only worth listening to if you're interested in the generative aspect.
