Ask HN: Best video chat applications for remote working?

I'm managing a remote team of developers at the moment, and my intention has been to use video chat via Skype or Google Hangouts for daily standups, planning meetings, etc. (Why video? Because the sense of human connection is much stronger, in my experience, and also body language helps a lot with communication.) However, on both Skype and Google Hangouts, we've had a pretty awful experience so far. Video dropping frequently, hangups, lag - it's not smooth, and it increases the length of each meeting by a measurable amount. Can anyone recommend a better / smoother / more stable alternative for remote working?
