Is it possible to know the actual amount of money that exchanged hands?
- nwh 13y agoChanged hands? There's no way of knowing if that happened. This is likely just a wallet being consolidated rather than actual purchase of goods of currency. The only thing we know is that a large number of Bitcoin moved from somewhere to somewhere and it's worth a lot. Looking at where the funds went from there, they seem to be breaking it up into 4000BTC sections, probably onto paper wallets.
- VMG 13y agoYou know the amount of Bitcoin, which you can multiply by the current exchange rates. The actual monetary value you'd receive by selling all at once is different, of course
- stephanerangaya 13y agoNo. There is no way to know if they paid using cash or tomatoes.
- JonFish85 13y agoIf a cash transaction was made, that would pop up all over the place. $150m doesn't just show up out of nowhere.
- NDizzle 13y agoUnless you're the federal reserve/hedge fund.
- dllthomas 13y agoIf you're the federal reserve, it "pops up out of nowhere" in a sense, but on a public balance sheet. If this was the Fed going long bitcoin, we'll know...
- happimess 13y agoI'm sure that there are entities who have $150m in cash lying around. Drug cartels come to mind.
- breischl 13y agoLet's see, there are approximately 1.22 trillion US dollars in circulation [1], so that would amount to a massive .001% of outstanding dollars. It may not come from "nowhere", but neither is it such a massively huge amount of money that it would necessarily register. Heck, that hedge fund (Knight Capital?) lost that in about 3 minutes a few years ago... - twotwotwo 13y agoLove this. 1 BTC == ??? plump juicy heirloom tomatoes.
- outworlder 13y agoCan we do the exchange in plump helmets?
- mkramlich 13y agoI'd be among the first to invest in Dorfcoin.
- brokentone 13y agoIt is possible to know 194,993.50000004 BTC changed between two addresses - these could be owned by the same individual, could be different accounts for the same individual. Anything else, USD, goats, Yuan, securities, etc that may have been traded would not be reported/recorded in the BTC transfer. edit: corrected by josephagoss, ty
- josephagoss 13y agoBetween two addresses, this transaction could easily be happening inside one wallet.

- jMyles 13y agoGoats aren't tracked by the blockchain?
- iLoch 13y agoNot today, but tomorrow holds more possibilities.
- mkramlich 13y agopeople are building (and/or have already built) systems that allow parties to transfer both pure-digital-only assets (images, videos, music, ebooks, etc), and, the rights to RL assets (eg. a goat, a painting, a vehicle), both "on top of" the Bitcoin network/architecture as well as via completely separate but Bitcoin-like systems. Systems which are also distributed, anonymity/privacy-optimized, resilient, globalized, bureaucracy-routing-around, efficient, automation-friendly, fee-less, built/run by engineers & entrepreneurs rather than by politicians/lawyers/bankers/aristocracies, etc.
- penguindev 13y agoWell, I give that a few years before the government takes those dreams down to size, just like the NSA did of the entire internet. Keep dreaming. / super jaded
- rmc 13y agoWhat makes you think cash changed hands? Someone could be moving bitcoins between 2 of their wallets they own, or they paid in pizzas.
