FWIW, the correct term is transgendered, but most transgendered people I know are not offended by "tranny." It's all about the context. "That fucking tranny" will be offensive while "I love my tranny, that bitch is awesome!" will be looked upon as a nice thing to say. Regardless, the author is trying to use shock value with the photo at the top and by including conversation that is entirely irrelevant.
