This reminded me of Bret Victor's talk http://worrydream.com/MediaForThinkingTheUnthinkable/ http://worrydream.com/MediaForThinkingTheUnthinkable/ Basically a lot of difficulty in understanding concepts in mathematical/engineering disciplines is in the default language or representation used to communicate them, but not on the concepts themselves. I wish there was a bigger focus in academia en general to communicate the concepts first and use the formal notation/language second. I think the best professors (in terms of making the students learn) are the ones that do this.
