Tesla used "quarter inch armor plate" (their words) to protect the battery. Some engineer picked that thickness and determined it was sufficient. These crashes show it may not be, in which case it needs to be improved. This is not something terrible about Tesla, this is the slow process of iteration that creates good safe products.
