- prodigal_erik 17y agoI'd like a typical GUI browser to let me right-click a password field and use a "show secret text" option. But it should never be the default, at least not for people like me who present on laptops too infrequently to form defensive habits around what my colleagues are about to see. Why oh why can't we just carry around certs on USB fobs? Isn't it the future yet?
- jackowayed 17y agoI have that. Firefox web developer toolbar. It lets you do pretty much anything, including "Forms->Show Passwords". I'm pretty sure there's no easy way to make it the default behavior, but you're just 2 clicks away from having it on the page you're viewing.
- stcredzero 17y agoThis is not appropriate for general consumers. They need a right-click "Show" option.
- dinkumthinkum 17y agoI've talked about this on the other duplicate post but honestly how often do you want that? You can always just open a text editor type it in that (or the address bar, whatever) and then copy and paste it.
- huhtenberg 17y agoYou cannot generally copy text from the password controls. They also typically implement API restrictions to prevent retrieving their text programmatically. This is by design.
- stcredzero 17y agoSome shops implement their own restriction code, so that you can't paste either! (Reliant Energy) This disables people using password vault programs, which is idiotic. Those users use longer, randomly created, unique passwords.
- TravisLS 17y agoI wholeheartedly agree with this solution with the additional possibility that you cookie the user's choice. Solutions like firefox plugins are fine for you and me, but not for the remedial computer users who mistype their passwords in the first place. On my sites, the vast majority of customer service calls/emails are people who can't log in, simply because they can't figure out how to type in their passwords correctly (we don't even have a attempts limit - they can try as many times as they like).
