Netflix had to work across low-end devices like Roku boxes, SmartTVs and Blu-ray players with very limited embedded CPUs and memory counted in the dozens of megabytes. Sony only need this to run on a latest-gen game console with an 8-core x86 CPU, 3 GB of RAM and a screaming GPU. Netflix never had the option of using WebGL.
