I feel like a tool for saying this, but getting a B in a calculus class doesn't qualify as "good at math." I was hoping this would be a story about someone bad at math ending up majoring in it. If the author had to put this much effort into it, well, no, they're probably not that good at math.
- trentlott 13y agoYou should. C is the average grade. B is above average. A is excellent. You think he's not "good" because he's above average while learning calculus at 37?
- Steuard 13y agoI see your point, but I see a world of difference between "good at math" as you've used it here and as it's used in the article. When you (or I) hear "I'm not good at math", you presumably take that to mean "it doesn't come easily, and I certainly wouldn't want to study it full time". But I think that when a lot of people hear the words "good at math", they take it as a statement about just basic competence. People saying "I'm not good at math" all too often mean "numbers scare me" or "I would never be capable of understanding that at all". And I think that's what this article is responding to.
