But why on earth Microsoft have to have a finger in every pie? Can't they just focus on some area and make some great products instead of trying to have monopoly in every little area and forcing or bullying everyone to user their product.
Just think about it, MS is most earning software company. But is there any field where MS is pioneer or revolutionize something? MS has monopoly in desktop but that's not for their quality of product, they just got lucky and IBM did some stupid mistakes. Windows is not a bad OS. But as the market leading OS, it's really mediocre. Even now Windows don't have basic feature like virtual desktops, a decent command shell, a good searching tool like "finder" in OS X.
- HNLogInsSuckAss 13y agoVS was a great product 20 years ago. Today it's looking like a mess. Does 2013 fix any of this crap: http://goldmanosi.blogspot.com/2012/05/visual-studio-is-it-getting-worse-as.html http://goldmanosi.blogspot.com/2012/05/visual-studio-is-it-g... You called Finder a good searching tool? Are you kidding? Finder is an unmitigated piece of shit, with search being one of its most defective facets. How is it a good searching tool when it gives you a list of hits but doesn't show WHERE they are? There isn't even an OPTION to add "path" to the column headers in the search results. The only option is to click on every hit, one at a time, and peer at the status bar at the bottom of the screen to see where it is. Also, Finder doesn't start searches in the selected folder. That folder isn't even offered as an option, either. You have to create a special search "destination", which is then permanent until you clean it up later. Not to mention Finder's other defects, like not sorting with FOLDERS AT THE TOP. And not creating a subfolder when you say "new folder" with another one selected. Then there's the little things, like Finder showing "disclosure triangles" on folders that don't have anything in them. Windows Explorer doesn't, which tells you at a glance when a folder's empty. At least it did, until Vista, when Microsoft inexplicably decided to hide all of the expand/collapse controls next to folders unless you happen to roll the cursor through the left pane.
- fekberg 13y ago> Even now Windows don't have basic feature like.. Hyper-V? Powershell? Search has been in Windows since forever.
- ygra 13y agoVirtual desktops, not machines. That being said, those have been in Windows since at least NT4 as a feature of the window manager and plenty of implementations that use other mechanisms to work around the drawbacks of the native method (e.g. being able to move windows between desktops).
- filipedeschamps 13y agoDo you know that Powershell is something they had to make to have something ti compete with native Shell, right? This isn't a native feature for Windows and they have to monkey patch it. If you have used anyother OS, you will find out that Windows is fundamentally broken.
- fekberg 13y agoI ran Gentoo as my main/desktop OS for a year or so. Have multiple machines that run ArchLinux and Ubuntu. I don't think Windows is fundamentally broken. "This isn't a native feature for Windows" That line makes no sense at all.
