The enthymeme in the air is that those unfortunates who were unable to find suitable employment in the academy do not deserve to live the life of the mind. But the university is no longer an institution “where teachers and students can pursue unconstrained the life of the mind.” This activity cannot be the exclusive domain of a tiny elite.
