Retyping email is much better than retyping the password. One time I had typed both password and confirmation wrong. Both were equal, but it wasn't what I thought I typed, I must had my hands in wrong place at the keyboard or something. If it was my email I would see it immediately and avoid a major 'wtf happened' later. Getting the email wrong is WAY WORST than getting the password wrong, after all the password recovery is made through it and nowadays. And it's also your login.
As for the copying n pasting just adding 'onpaste="return false;"' to the confirmation textbox would prevent on the majority of the browsers.
“Every time you require a human user to tell a computer things that it already knows or can deduce, you are making a human serve the machine“. Jesus, isn't this one pretty obvious? It's not a matter of ease of use, it's a matter of correctness of the user input. That's why is a freaking confirmation. This statement is completely out of place in the article, IMO.
