It seems like there are two paths to sustainability in a startup: 1) Become profitable early and stay profitable. This gives you the luxury of not relying on outside investment, though the option to take funding still exists. 2) Grow, grow, grow. If you take a million dollars today and come back for more money a year from now, you need to justify that the million dollars produced something. Everpix did neither. They weren't profitable and their growth did not justify the money the took.
