What would work for the Indians is the English English cliche of British civil servants -- everyone understands English if you make a point of speaking sloowwllyy and e-nun-ci-ate cleeaarrllyy. (Not a native speaker, even if I've read mostly in English since I was a teenager. Which was a while ago.)
