I'm trying to do a similar thing. I've purchased "The Princeton Companion to Mathematics" (http://press.princeton.edu/titles/8350.html http://press.princeton.edu/titles/8350.html). I've not read a huge amount so far, but what I've read so far has been well-written and understandable.
