i love the analogy, but you're overthinking it. most people on technical forums have never been poor, so they've never been in the cage and have only heard about second-hand. i didn't understand what poverty was like until i started smoking weed all the time, neglected most aspects of my life and got heavily into debt. i still wan't poor, but i started to understand why people without money, who are constantly hounded by debt collectors, tend to focus so much on the short term.
