It's interesting to me that the auto industry has been around for a hundred years, and while some components are standard (wheels, battery), 95% of the components in a car are not interchangeable. Until recently, the performance of cars has been relatively stable. So I'm not sure this observation is universal to all industries.
- daliusd 13y agoI'm not sure what car are you driving. Yes, you can't take any part from Audi and use it BMW but you have choice. You can buy parts for your car from several different manufacturers: you can buy original parts if you are/feel very rich but you can buy parts from less known companies. As well you can take two not working old cars of the same model and have quite good chance making one working ("donor car"). Meanwhile if I you ruin your phone you basically can't fix it - especially if parts are tightly compressed. Another possibility you have assigned very special meaning to word "interchangeable".
