That's why people like Jon Huntsman didn't win the Republican primary in 2012, Well part of that is that primaries are mostly voted on by the extremists within the parties. The majority of republicans may well have supported Huntsman, but since most of them don't vote in the primary we never got a chance to find out. When you consider that roughly 40% of eligible voters didn't vote at all in the latest presidential election -- more than either major party were able to muster -- it seems reasonable to say that the electorate isn't pleased with the current situation but isn't empowered enough to do anything about it.
