I would have preferred they do that, but I have to admit, whenever I plug in my girlfriend's iPhone 5S, I have to drool at the connector that cannot be put in upside down. Apple just made a better connector, period, and it is in their best interests to use it whenever possible and just provide an adapter to use worse ones. For micro-USB I usually have to squint at the device and the cable tip for a bit before I connect anything and Apple's experience is just plain better for something that happens multiple times a day, often in bed with the lights dim in the morning or evening.
