I had friends that lived like kings in Santa Cruz CA for easily less than $500/year. They lived for free in hidden tents/camps above UCSC, ate/made free food with Food Not Bombs, biked everywhere around CA and generally just lived it up. There are other ways to exist and thrive in this world outside the grind.
