With Firefox OS, Ubuntu Phone, and MeeGo/Sailfish, it seems that other open source mobile OSes are getting traction. At the very least manufacturers and carriers want to work with them enough to ship products.
- tsunamifury 13y agoTizen phones won't be launching until January at the earliest. None of these phones are gaining even remote amounts of traction. Even the Blackberry 10 launch is an order of magnitude more successful than even the most successful open source OS you've listed here. There is a lot of positive talk form techies and insiders about these devices, but I have yet to encounter a customer in the real world who is even aware of any of these devices, let alone interested.
- pessimizer 13y agoWho cares? Make them rock-solid, overpowered, and charge $1000 for them. Sell them to techies and insiders.
- Pxtl 13y agoYup. Until a big brand-name jumps on one of the new free OS platforms and starts pushing a device hard, the public isn't going to care. If, say, Sony decided to commit hard to Tizen then you might start hearing about it. Samsung is going to be testing the water very gently because they're so heavily committed to Android, and they're co-steering Tizen.
- Apocryphon 13y agoPresumably, any real world customers are likely to be those in developing markets.
- pjmlp 13y agoNot only that, but Tizen development seems not to be that important after all, http://www.infoq.com/news/2013/10/samsung-slowing-tizen http://www.infoq.com/news/2013/10/samsung-slowing-tizen
- gexla 13y agoYou would need to travel to Asia. And of course, there are huge markets for smartphones in Asia. I haven't seen any of these yet either, but I have seen a lot of fakes, knockoffs, and a bunch of other generally weird stuff. Edit: Actually, we probably won't see them for a while simply because they are largely just getting started. My point in mentioning Asia is that a lot of weird phones and electronics come out of China and spread to the surrounding regions.
