People complain loudly about gotchas in JS, but when you look at what C++ programmers have to contend with...
- hamidr 13y agoAt least C++(11) is a (better) statically typed language :) Although, This isn't even half of it! thanks god the girl didn't know anything about templates.
- dllthomas 13y agoTemplates are a horrid syntax for an okay functional, compile-time language. They can be useful - in quite a few ways an improvement on C macros. I say this as someone who's done quite a bit of C and C++, and am currently working mostly happily in C at work and Haskell on my side project.
- obiterdictum 13y agoConversely, JS programmers I complain about JS gotchas about contend that "once you learn all those horrible gotchas, it's a great language". Even C++ programmers, at least the ones that had good fortune to have time away from C++, agree that C++ gotchas are unforgivable. But in general, C++ and JS communities have the biggest cases of Stockholm Syndrome I've seen. Disclaimer: I'm a recovering C++ programmer.
- humanrebar 13y agoFor the niches that JS fills, a clear language with few pitfalls would be best. C++ has a different niche. On top of that, everyone acknowledges the warts of C++, but they're largely necessary for either backward compatibility or performance reasons.
