Inline editing makes perfect sense if the only thing you ever publish to or plan to publish to is the web. Many large organizations do more than that. Apps, feeds, radio, print, eBooks. There's more than just the web. Inline editing privileges one of these over the other, which can be a misnomer. Making editing on the web is great, but we need to be careful that our tools aren't too closely coupled to web display where inappropriate.
