I have to continually beat this argument into my boss's brain, who insists things should always be black. I follow the same principle for white. Keep #ffffff for the highlight on the really light thing you want to show. Also I find asking most displays to show #ffffff often pushes them too far into the nonlinear, which ends up causing some odd artefacts when used with e.g. gradients.
