I don't agree with this, because I'm a mediocre programmer. I won't be forever, granted, but I most certainly am today. I study and work hard at improving, but that doesn't "put me ahead of most"--not today, anyway.

It does put you ahead in the process of becoming a great programmer, because many have yet to realise this (or that's how I interpreted cjf's comment).
