Missing the point IMHO. Changing the title isn't the problem. Lack of transparency is. That's what causing the complaints and conspiracy theories. Which BTW is also a form of being "mean" (especially when the same opaqueness is applied to harsher forms of moderation), so if the increase of mean comments is a high priority, you may want to consider setting the tone. Anonymous moderation without transparency feels an awful lot like bullying. HN has grown to a point where most users have no clue who "pg" is, and what his motives are for running this forum. You're the wizard behind the curtain. I don't think you're gonna solve the issues of a growing community by keeping it that way.
