New superconductor is first predicted then created
- acadien 13y agoAn equally huge win for this case in particular is that they managed to predict the crystalline structure correctly as well[1]. While predicting superconductivity is a significant and important challenge, crystal structure prediction is an equally large area of research with constantly improving results. It also has broad applications, all the way from protein folding to high pressure geophysics. [1] http://prl.aps.org/abstract/PRL/v105/i21/e217003 http://prl.aps.org/abstract/PRL/v105/i21/e217003
- jessriedel 13y agoThe last quote is a crucial one. We have a pretty good theoretical understanding of low-temp superconductivity, but are still very confused about how high-temp superconductors work. This is too bad since the latter have many more engineering uses, including the room temperature holy grail.
