How did a "You should all feel very lucky to be here, you have been given quite the opportunity and not everyone is so lucky. Count yourselves fortunate, work hard and try and make a real contribution to the world to make the most of where you are" get characterized as a "fuck you" speech? Did people only read the headline and get caught up on the word "deserve"? Am I crazy in that I found the hypothetical speech to be motivating and very positive overall? These people are young adults, they can handle a fair bit of truth, especially since they are young, smart and at Stanford so the truth is pretty damn great. Why on earth people think this would be demotivating is beyond me.
