Do You Live in a Bubble? A Quiz
- herbig 13y agoHow many times do I eat at Denny's? Have I ever bought a pickup truck? Is this a joke?
- herbig 13y ago"Have you ever participated in a parade not involving global warming, a war protest, or gay rights?" You could just ask the reverse and find people living in a conservative bubble. Yeah, this is a joke.
- alexeisadeski3 13y agoYou're definitely missing the point of that question.
- mdturnerphys 13y agoNo, I think this is the point, that there are groups so isolated from "American culture at large" that they only see it as a joke or with disdain.
- herbig 13y agoBeing in a bubble away from fast food and television is not a problem with education, it's a product of it, and being "snobby" in this sense is the perception of those who make poor decisions despite evidence. This guy wrote a book and made up a catchy quiz to support his arguments.
- BadCookie 13y agoHow is buying a pickup truck a poor decision?
- yetanotherphd 13y agoNo, poor and lower middle class White people are often the brunt of jokes, but these questions are designed to illustrate a real distinction between groups of people.
- JoeAltmaier 13y agoIts a bubble if you are isolated from the mainstream. Never mind how good a behavior is or what the right thing to do is. Its all about how some folks have no idea what most folks are doing. So no, its no joke. If you don't do most of those things, then you don't do what most people do. Be proud of that if you like. But don't imagine for an instant that you are knowledgeable about mainstream America.
- squozzer 13y ago25 questions can only paint broad strokes. Given that it's on pbs.org, it's probably best at gauging how much exposure to "archetypical" America the PBS / NPR demo possesses.
- jljljl 13y agoI think it's more of a teaching tool, given that they have the "Why is this question here?" link. You see the statement, click the link, and realize that some assumptions you made about how the average American lives are off base. I doubt the final score matters much at all.
- yetanotherphd 13y agoI like this because it highlights a disparity that is ignored by the mainstream, who like to paint everything as White vs Black/Hispanic. He points out a gap that crosses racial lines (in the sense that both sides contain a lot of Whites). It makes a nice counterpoint to the usual "how privileged are you" quizzes.
