Ask HN: How should I learn about cybersecurity?

Beyond knowing how to implement SSL on my websites, my knowledge of cybersecurity is extremely shallow ... I feel worse than ever about this lack in wake of the Snowden leaks. Where should I start and how should I proceed? In particular, what are some programming exercises I should do to understand cybersec better?
