Android barcode scanner in 6 lines of Python code
- debt 17y agoA typical barcode scan on a g1 takes 4-5 seconds. It would take a long time to scan a large collection of books. This is a cool proof of concept and a sweet demonstration of ASE, but it'd be wiser to purchase a $100 barcode scanner for scanning a large collection of books.
- paulgb 17y agoReally? That's embarrassingly slow. Does it do better for QR-codes? It'd be wiser to purchase a $100 barcode scanner for scanning a large collection of books. You could also try a CueCat, if you can find one on eBay.
- DTrejo 17y agoUnder good conditions (plenty of light, not much shaking), it may be faster that 4-5 seconds.
- pierrefar 17y agoReally? Turning on the camera does take a few seconds, but then it's very quick to focus and snap barcodes. I find the limitation is due to ambient light rather, once you get the camera up.
- smokinn 17y agoBut a barcode scanner can't connect to the internet. It's pretty obvious that at some point someone's going to write an app so that you can snap a barcode and compare with prices online. Your barcode scanner may be faster but that's much more convenient.
- jawngee 17y agoEverytime I see "X in N lines of Y code" I want to choke somebody because it's a disingenuous metric. I know it sounds like I'm nit picking, but it's really a giant pet peeve of mine. That is all.
- DougBTX 17y agoHmm... "Open Source Android Scripting Environment includes Bar Code recognition API".
- EliAndrewC 17y agoIt can definitely be misleading, but it's still a useful metric. When I read "Android barcode scanner in 6 lines of Python code" my thought is, cool, there's clearly a good barcode scanning library for Android in Python and I can look and find easy 6-line examples of how to do something useful with it. This makes that style of headline much more useful to me than "Python/Android Barcode Scanning Library Example Code" or somesuch, because it gives me some idea of the level of effort required to do something useful with the library (in this case 6 lines).
- req2 17y agohttp://norvig.com/spell-correct.html http://norvig.com/spell-correct.html is a good read for anyone who is interested in making a real claim of "X in N lines of Y code".
