Agreed. I keep all of photos in a directory and I use a program called Jhead to rename the files based on jpeg metadata. Example:
20130101_12-13-34.jpg (YearMonthDay_Hours-Minutes-Seconds)
I chose this scheme because it works on all the OSes I use and, having no spaces, tab-completes nice with Bash.
