If you dont mind me asking, what hype are you referring to? I think a lot of people are correct in assuming that Rails is a good solution for a large (largest?) class of web applications, from cruds to crud+some ajax and so on. We know for a fact that it is working for some really successful companies, so I think depicting people as living in some dream just for rationally concluding that a particular technology will suit them is, well, a stretch.
- sdepablos 13y agoI've been breathing internet from 1999, and believe me, when Rails was born it was - specially compared with the former current status of web development - awesome and game changing. That justified hype brought a lot of people, specially designers, to Rails, and still brings them even if other tools are better suited for the task in hand, and you know what they say, "if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail".
- riffraff 13y agoSorry, I have failed to express myself. Rationally concluding that X is the best fit for your problem is not what I'm arguing against. What I'm stating is that often the technology choice is driven more by fashion then by technical merits. E.g. in 2007, rails may have been a better choice to build a web chat than erlang or java, but it's more likely that it was just more "hip".
- MrBra 13y agoor maybe because it was less off-putting than building a web chat in erlang or java?
