I can't agree more. There were no connections with my current job - the only person I knew in the whole country was my wife! My resume barely matched the requirements the position, but I landed an interview on the strength of my cover letter. I basically made the same points about enthusiasm, learning ability, etc, and tried hard to come across as hard working and humble.
