I think the main thing is that this stuff is constantly changing, and you've got to have both a willingness and the time to stay on top of it. I don't feel that I'm any less equipped to learn new things at 40, but the external responsibilities that I have now (notably family) have significantly cut down on my free time, which is when I usually play around with new languages and frameworks.
