How is it a misuse of the term "pattern matching" ?

  Generically http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pattern_matching http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pattern_matching And as for a language / call semantic look at Erlang for what actual pattern matching looks like.
