My big question is: how do you make the PDF? I have my resume in LaTeX right now - and it works well enough (although, it is getting a bit long in the tooth).
Ideally, I would like to store my resume in some sort of presentation agnostic 'schema' which I could then compile into HTML, plain-text, and PDF with one click. Does anyone know of any tool that does something like this?
I'm almost thinking of XML/XSLT except for the fact that XSLT is the devil's language (and I don't know a good way to use it to generate a pretty PDF).
- boryas 17y agoapache fop is a reasonable way to use xml/xslt to make a decently pretty PDF http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/fop/ http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/fop/
- mikedouglas 17y agoWhat you're describing is latex. There exists a myriad of scripts to convert latex to different formats[1], so I'd try to adopt one of these before creating your own XML schema. - smanek 17y agoYes and no ... Maybe my resume is written incorrectly now but,a s it stands, a lot of presentation is mixed with the content. That would make it ugly to do things like have only the HTML version include logos of employers or having the plaintext use a completely different formatting.
- maggie 17y agoI would like to do this too. I've thought about it a bit, and it seems like you could create a latex template that would allow for easy parse-and-export into HTML. That way, you retain your latex styling, and adjust it accordingly for the HTML version. Honestly, though, I don't change my resume enough for something like this to be worth the time-input for me. I'm probably going to just live with having two versions to build/update.
- twopoint718 17y agoI've used this: http://xmlresume.sourceforge.net/ http://xmlresume.sourceforge.net/ It puts out pretty good looking resumes and it can render to HTML, plain text, or PDF. It is written in Java and uses Apache FOP http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/fop/ http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/fop/
- omouse 17y agoYou don't need to make a PDF of this. You just print it out. HTML and the Web are made for paper. The screen is just treated by current GUIs and by the Web as a glorified paper-displaying device. If you're thinking of sending this to other people, just send them the link and highlight it in someway to attract their attention.
