It doesn't eliminate them, but it minimises the effort of performing these steps. You are of course correct in saying that you need to do manual testing to discover issues that you never thought of, but this is a separate process (which should not usually be done by developers who are too entrenched in the inner workings of the system to see it with fresh eyes).
