So many Ruby/Python programs are dependent on several frameworks or libraries, nothing seems to be self-contained anymore. That's putting me off, too, however I think that's in part because of my outdated expectations (as much as I hate to admit it).
Things are trending towards user programs that focus exclusively on high-level problem solving and delegate all building blocks to 3rd party modules, and these modules may in turn do the same.
