If you want to use BSD on a laptop, your best bet is PC-BSD[1]. I love using FreeBSD on my laptop, but it definitely didn't "just work," you definitely have to tinker with it. PC-BSD is based on FreeBSD but attempts to "just work" in the way you are looking for.
