About a year ago I deployed Zookeeper to support the Redis failover gem. All of the problems were a result of my lack of knowledge on how to deploy and configure it. My guess is that its mostly used right now in Hadoop/Solr installations and is configured specifically for those. I've been using Doozer at home on a few side projects and, mainly for it being written in Go, have enjoyed using it a lot more. The point on security is spot on. After reading this post I am definitely going to take a look at etcd.
