might be able to do some snooping around to see if the https gmail also encrypts the chat traffic. seems like that could be the most simple solution.

  It does. Settings > "Always use https" But from that post, it looks like her company is blocking gmail also.

    perhaps. if they're that restrictive, though, they would probably also be wary of SSH open to a remote server for long periods.
