Did you btw know that you can turn off "simple passcode" and then use a purely numeric longer passcode? In that case the iphone will still show the big easy-to-hit numeric keyboard allowing you to type in the arbitrary length numeric code. Brilliant! I did not know that. I haven't been using Long Passcode Mode because I didn't want to type on the tiny keyboard to unlock 100 times a day.
