Would an electronic license plate still draw power when the vehicle is parked? That could be a problem if it drains your battery. Also, wouldn't the car need to be altered to run power to the outside of the vehicle? Also, what is to stop hacking? It is more difficult to swap out physical license plates quickly, but I can imagine bootleg electronic ones that allow electronic swapping on the fly, e.g. display the fake one while speeding.

- eksith 13y agoMy guess is that it will use some form of e-ink. Once set, they don't draw power and would only need to refresh a bit to reset it to something else like "stolen" etc... But of course, there would be bootleg ones pretty soon. These will get reverse engineered in short order.
