California poised to implement first electronic license plates
- TheLoneWolfling 13y agoSo... What happens if/when signals are jammed/spoofed? Also, if indeed it is a changing display, it requires power to do so. What about draining batteries caused by that? Not to mention what about small motercycles, that don't always have a 12v electrical system, if they have one at all?
- byoung2 13y agoWould an electronic license plate still draw power when the vehicle is parked? That could be a problem if it drains your battery. Also, wouldn't the car need to be altered to run power to the outside of the vehicle? Also, what is to stop hacking? It is more difficult to swap out physical license plates quickly, but I can imagine bootleg electronic ones that allow electronic swapping on the fly, e.g. display the fake one while speeding.

- byoung2 13y agoSo it can't be seen from a distance when parked...sounds like a big drawback.
- eksith 13y agoMy guess is that it will use some form of e-ink. Once set, they don't draw power and would only need to refresh a bit to reset it to something else like "stolen" etc... But of course, there would be bootleg ones pretty soon. These will get reverse engineered in short order.
