It became less painful when I finally located the control panel and created a shortcut on the desktop. That along with a shortcut to my user folder (Documents, Pictures etc...). Live tiles were something that makes absolutely no sense on a non-touch device, but that's the default. I still click on the desktop tile as soon as it loads.
